Trump Considers Repatriation of Ukrainian Refugees

Mustafa Hameed

President Donald Trump said he was deciding whether to revoke the temporary legal status afforded to some 240,000 Ukrainians who fled the conflict with Russia to the US under the Biden approved Ukrainian refugee programme.

The potential move has left Ukrainian refugees shocked and anxious about their future in the United States.

Ukrainians Refugees in America are feeling less welcome since Trump came to office.

When asked about the proposal by a reporter in the Oval Office Trump said: "There were some people that think that's appropriate, and some people don't, and I'll be making the decision pretty soon."

In order to quieten the growing chorus of discontent the White House's Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt accused Reuters of spreading misinformation and fake news saying: "This is more fake news from Reuters based on anonymous sources who have no idea what they are talking about. The truth: no decision has been made at this time."

As US immigration authorities continue to ramp up deportations, with thousands of South Americans being deported, Ukrainians are now feeling a sense of dread over their own future. With the American public divided over their support of Ukraine, Ukrainian refugees are certainly seeing a more hostile reception than the one they received under the Biden administration.
